New to Daihatsu 4wd problem

Forum:

Hi
New to this forum but well known on others, I have aquired a 1984/5 ish Fourtrack.
All would appear fine except for 4WD when engaged, the prop to the front wheels is not being turned by the transfer box. It will freely turn until the front hubs are locked, but locked or not there is no drive going to the front.
There is no strange noises from the transfer box to suggest a failure, but also the 4WD sign on the dash does not illuminate ( may not be connected to this problem ) Low ratio is working fine for rear wheel drive only and there would appear to be no way to have 4WD in high ratio Unknw
If I am doing something wrong please tell me, If it sounds like a fault any advice would be welcomed

Cheers
Keith

Keith, the first thing I can

Keith, the first thing I can think of is stripped drive to the front. Drop the oil from the transfer case, then undo the four bolts holding the rear of the front prop shaft. Now undo the 4 bolts holding the front extension housing to the box. It should then pull off in your hand. Have a look at the teeth on the inside of the drive. They should be bevelled on both sides. Then try putting car in gear, and engauging 4wd. Now try to turn the gear thats inside the case. Hopefully, this will turn up something that may be the cause of your problems. After that, it gets a little more involved. I have seen selection forks half worn away, also there is a possibility of the roll pin connecting the selector fork and rod failing.
Good Luck.

How is 4WD selected

Thanks for that, I will give it a go.
How is 4WD selected Unknw is it purely mechanical on the selector lever Unknw or are there solenoids, vacuum switches etc involved Unknw that I could check first

Opps, didnt think of that. Wh

Opps, didnt think of that. When you mentioned 84/85?? I pictured the same deal as mine, Transfer lever goes from 2H-4H-N-4L. Later transfer cases had a push button 4wd engaugement button on the dash. It worked through vacuum or electric solinoids to activate 4H, then lever on case to activate 4L. What does your transfer case knob say, 2H-4H-N-4l, or 2H-N-4L. If the latter, then you have the solinods, and perhaps it is one of these that is crook. Yours may have been retrofited with a later box. Others on this board will have knowledge of testing and repairing these transfer cases. I have never played with one personally. Apologies for the run around b4.

Transfer Box

Hi, and thanks David
Mine has 2H-N-4L and does not mention 4WD on it at all, there is an orange switch on the dash that does not appear to do anything, how is 4WD actually selected Unknw

Keith

Engaging 4x4

Keith,

Stop right there and listen up.
Mine had the exact same problem and after length of time searching I found the fault.
It's probably the vacuum tube or a busted switch on your gearbox.

Crawl under the car and look for the two switches with tubes coming out on the right of the gearbox just where the shifter goes in. It’s just a hand full and you can’t miss them.

Take them out and also the rubber hoses all the way to the vacuum pomp behind the alternator in the engine bay.

Check the switches in working by connecting them too a 12volts source.
You'll here a clicking sound if they work.
Check also the hoses for leaks and do flush them while your ad it.

My switches were busted and the tubes were clouded.
Could not find the switches anywhere accept in Europe but the price was very discomforting... Smile

So what I did is I took to switches of the airco of a crashed Toyota sedan that matched the busted ones and soldered the old connexion plugs on them. My 4x4 operates like new and it only put me back US$5,- and some own effort. Takes more time finding the right switches than putting them in… :o)

Yes your button on the dash operates the 4x4 high and the light goes on only when the 4x4 really kicks in.

Hope this is your problem and also your solution.

Good luck,

Gilly

vacuum pipes etc

K,

Their is only one vacuum hose coming from the engine bay and a few shortones going into the gearbox (forgot how many). Just take a good look at the setup before dismanteling it and you'll be able to put it together again.

The spot is too tight to take a good pic but I will send you one of the busted switches.

Hey lets communicate on your forum so other people can share this info to.
Please copy this text to the forum.

Thanks Gilly, I didnt even co

Thanks Gilly, I didnt even consider the possibility of it being a solinoid case. Apologies for the run around before.
