1985 Daihatsu Charade South African Import

Forum:

Hi guys, got a bit of a weird one.

Just bought a 1985 charade 1.0 5dr that was originally imported from South Africa.

The speedo is still in KM's,and is in excellent order. The weirdest thing is that on the VIN plate on the Bulkhead on the drivers side (which is original) it states the model is Charde but the manufacturer as being ALFA ROMEO!!!

I know that they briefly collaborated with Nissan producing the ALFA Arna and Nissan Cherry Europe, but can find no records of Daihatsu collaborating with Alfa

But can anyone shine a light on why Alfa would have been building Daihatsu's?

Cheers
Steve

1985 Charade ex S.Africa

I lived in S.Africa from 1975 to 1997. The Alfa factory was in a town called Brits to the west of Pretoria which is where the Charade was assembled (the low volume production runs meant the car was probably reassembled there from a CKD kit ie Completely Knocked down). Alfa also assembled Fiat Unos as well (my wife had one). The Nissan factory at Rosslyn near Pretoria used to assemble Land Rovers, there were all sorts of wierd arrangements in the SA car industry, the Mercedes factory in East London assembled Honda Ballades (Acclaims?). The VW factory in Port Elizabeth still makes the MK 1 Golf (Citigolf) with a cracking updated 1.8 engine. If I remember correctly the Charade was not a big seller as the engine was too small. Most of S.Africa sits 5000-6000 ft above sea level so in Johannesburg/Pretoria (largest market) engines are 15% down on power (3% loss for every 1000ft). Most cars tended to have larger engines than their European equivilants eg 1.8 against a 1.6 engine. As cars do not rust on the Highveldt any anti rust treatment was very basic, check your carefully and good luck.
