revolver shackles

Forum:

Has anyone fitted revolver shackles to a fourtrak? if so where did u get it done or get them from? Any other suggestions on increasing articulation would be really helpful too! cheers

articulation

Hi, have been working out how to increase the articulation on my fourtrak and looked at revolver/scissor type shackles but have more or less dismissed them as they rely on the amount of axle drop available and the problem with the rear of the fourtrak is the shocks and their mounting points, the length of these is the limiting factor and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to mount longer ones without having to come up through the floor .The axle will only drop as far as the shock will let it and the standard shocks don't allow much at all.I have managed some improvement with 3" over shackles and 2" spacers in the bumpstops which allow a shock with a couple of inches more in the body, this allows the same amount of compression as the standard set up but around 3" extra in drop. This needs soft springs to work best so I have removed the helpers and 1 leaf from my rear standard springs(my car is a soft top so is substantially lighter than a hard top but on the same springs). On the front I have worked out where I can fit custom shock mounts so that I can fit much longer shocks but the car is presently on milner springs at the front which are a waste of time, they are way way too stiff. Using our works forklift under one front wheel I can cross-axle the car until it lifts a rear wheel off the ground and the front will only compress around 1-2",drop is none existant. I have some nice soft pro comp springs ordered and will be sorting the front out once they arrive. I'll post again once I have done so.
Also Neil if you read this I've sent you a couple of messages/essays Biggrin , but they seem to dissapear when I click the send button, hoping to be registering as a Ltd company in a couple of weeks so should be able to push some more stuff out quite quickly once the liability side of things is sorted,
Best regards,
Dave.

leaf springs

Hi All.
I have fitted Milners leaf springs to my Fourtrak and I will agree with 'Dogsboss' and others, that they are to hard/stiff,but they have given me extra lift. I have thought about cutting out a leaf and changing the shocks. I have put posts on site about the lack of suspension movement that I have experienced with these springs. Mine receive a regular dressings with a spray on silicon lubricant, this has helped to a degree.

I saw a suzy on Exmoor which had swinging shackels, back and front, and thought they were quite impressive, but did notice that the front leaf springs were attached in the reverse to Fourtraks, fixed at the rear of the front leaves, swinging at the front (front axle), so as not to pull the propshaft apart on extension.

revolve

Hi, what you saw were probably a set of D Flex shackles, they are a scissor type shackle, what happens is they fold up to a point when you have normall ride height on level ground but when the vehicle artics they allow the axle to drop along way, this is great - to a point but it can also be the quickest roll down a slope youve ever had, its not good practice to put them on all four corners, either just one axle or the other - normally the rear, what happens is there is no weight on the wheel as it drops and weight is transfered to the other side creating serious weight shifting problems so as you go along a side slope the scissors can unexpectingly come open and create a vehicle to roll down hill, that is why if you have these shackles its best to put them on just one axle so that this cant happen, The suzukis are front shackled like the asia rocsta aswell etc, but you can get shackle reversal kits for them which lots of people do but i dont know really which is best its tit for tat. You can get revolver shackles from america but your limited with the daihatsu on the damper length front im afraid, there not designed for easy modifications especially if you have a nice one which you dont want to hack about!
