Which oil is the best for a sportrak

Forum:

can you tell me which type of engine oil, or a particular brand is best suited to the sportrak.I have a '97 sportrak with 47k miles.

I personally use Castrol GTX

I personally use Castrol GTX Magnatec, one of the best grades avaliable they reckon. But of course there are many others around probably just as good, and as long as you are prepared to spend an extra few pounds, you'll always have the knowledge that you have a good protection for the engine, and by doing it yourself you'll know whats gone in. And aviod those cheap oils you see in supermarkets and garages for around a fiver a gallon like the plague!

Magnatec

I agree with Dave to use Castrol Magnatec. Depending where you buy it from its only a couple of quid more than the other oils and my Sportrak loves it. Since using magnatec instead of Halfords Ownbrand Semi-Synthetic I have noticed that it uses less oil and a slightly increased MPG. Plus you also know its protecting your engine from the moment you turn the engine on. Only bad thing is that the bottles magnatec are in tend to leak more.

Nearly forgot to mention that the Sportrak does need the oil to be 10/40 oil

Technically the statement the oil needs to be 10W40 is wrong- the owner's manual gives a list of recommended oil weights that vary depending on the temperature of the region you live in. Anything from 5W30 (for temps below 10 degrees C) to 20W50 (for -12 to over 38 degrees) can be used.

Personally I use Mobil 1 5W50 as it covers the whole range. There were some problems with a batch Castrol Magnatec oil here in Australia that resulted in damage to car engines.....

Which oil is best for a Sportrak

I use BP Visco 5000 fully synthetic, for the following reasons:-
1. Fully synthetic oils do not break down as readily as mineral oils and give greater protection across the full range of viscosity ratings.
2. Visco 5000 is a 5W-40, giving improved oil flow at start up, better fuel economy and great cold weather protection.
3. It is a low ash oil, which means that it reduces fouling in the engine and maintains it in a clinically clean condition.
4. Independent tests showed that this oil resulted in zero measurable engine wear under accelerated severe engine performance tests.
5. I have used Penrite in other 4WD vehicles in the past -with good results but it is a mineral oil which results in relatively high ash deposits, so must be changed very regularly to avoid gummy engine deposits.
7. Whilst having previously been an officianado of Castrol products, I have not tried Magnatec but their top of the range Castrol R Synthetic did not stack up too well against the BP product in the independent test that I read. Having said that, I still believe Castrol make generally good products which would perform well generally.
Experience over the years has shown that provided you use a good quality oil of the correct viscosity and with the highest possible rating, changed at regular intervals, you should get respectable engine life and performance. The only product that I have ever had repeated bad experiences with and would personally never touch again is Valvoline, which I would not use to oil the wheels on my billy cart, but some people swear by it.
