inner tyre wear on F78 Fourtrak

Forum:

F78

I have a 2.8TDX which i adore.
Since i have owned it i have had to change the front tyres every 15000 miles due to severe wear,
The outer edges have still got say 6mm of good tread but even with tyre turning every 6000 miles it dosent seem to make any difference.
By the way ive had the wheels tracked but the problem remains.
Is this something i have to put up with or does someone have a magical cure, if so tell me about it
Cheers Nige

Jack the front end up complet

Jack the front end up completely, then give the tyres a good wobble, both top to bottom, and side to side. Is there any movement? Is the steering difficult? Is there any abnormal wear on the disc pads? It sounds like your upper kingpin bearings are shot, allowing both tyres to lean inwards at the top under the weight of the vehicle, therefore wearing the inner edge of the tyres. I have never had this type of problem in the 10 or so years I have owned an F75. In fact I cant remember, if ever, I have had the wheels aligned.

As it's an F78 (Indipendent),

As it's an F78 (Indipendent), you may have a camber problem. This is basicly as Bundy has described, except as it's indipendent, it's the wish bones cousing the problem. Either the ball joints holding the hub assembly the the wish bones are worn, or the mounts where the wish bones meat the chassis are just set up wronge. The effect is the same as Bundy described. Some garages have equipment to check for cammber, though there fewer and ferther betwen than garages with alignment gear.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
