Have I been sold a pup!

Forum:

I recently purchased a Rocky Fourtrak off a friend and took it in for a good service so that I knew where I stood with oil changes etc.

The garage told me that it was beyond economical repair due to the following faults;

1, clutch incorrectly adjusted – dragging – suspect at end of life
2, o/s/f inner wing – steering box area – repaired with silicone
3, o/s outer body sill – poorly welded repair (tack welds – not full weld)
4, o/s inner sill – badly corroded & holed – also previously repaired with filler
5, o/s/r wheel arch – corroded near body mount area
6, n/s/r wheel arch – corroded near body mount
7, n/s/r wheel arch – general corrosion
8, n/s/r chassis tube corroded & holed – seriously weakened (this is the main rear axle support tube)
9, n/s inner / outer sill corroded badly – filler repair previously
10, rear axle – all suspension arm bushes (has polly bushes fitted) – breaking up & excess movement

Is it likely that the garage have mistaken the silicone for some other product used on Rocky's

In particular the biggest problem is point 8 where they reckon they need to take the body off which may collapse. Don't suppose there is supposed to be a hole there, it's about the size of a 1p.

Beyond economical repair?

Thoughts please. Gutted as I love her.

Cheers in advance

Sounds like a typical

Sounds like a typical independent fourtrak, if you look online, especially facebook- that's where most of us are now, there's a daihatsu group site, you've got a vehicle that's mechanically sound but suffers from rot, the sills- people are cutting them off completely and rewelding on box section to make them sound- this is fine, body mount areas are a bit tricky but can still be welded up and rebuilt, bushes are bushes, they wear so replace, as for the clutch, it's adjusted on the bulkhead by a clip that holds the cable, it may be in the wrong place but you can test the ability of a clutch by trying to take off in 3rd or above- something you should always check when buying a car anyway, new clutch kits from milner off road are £80. The rear crossmember is a common issue, to sort that you just cut it out and replace/reweld in a new piece, it's all work, easy to do yourself if you have lots of time, tools and ability but if your going down the route of paying someone then it's megabux, depending on where you are in the country contact either bloodredoffroad.com or Atkinson automotives, you'll find them on this site.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
