Help please - starting issue - fourtrak 1998 2.8

Forum:

Hi all,

a few months back the starter was clicking and eventually starting - anyway when I had a look the battery terminal connector had a crack in it. changed it , put another heavy duty marine type on and all was well again.

Lately it started doing it again so I take all the connections off the battery, clean them up, tighten up really tight and it's fine again - for about 10 days then it starts doing it again, one click and then starts ok.

I'm thinking that the starter is ok but where else could there be a problem Unknw

Please help before I tear out what little hair I have left Smile

thanks

Thanks Bob, only the battery

Thanks Bob, only the battery terminal is lead. Definitely something similar as it works fine for a week or more

Starter

Remove the starter and clean all its connections. Also the battery to vehicle connection could be corroded. Apply vaseline to the connections to stop the corrosion.
If that fails the solenoid on the starter could be defective.

Most likely the starter

Most likely the starter brushes, these give similar symptoms when they are on their way out.

Cost about £8 from an auto electrical supplier and a fairly easy job to do.

Thanks for the replies. Do

Thanks for the replies. Do the new starter brushes need to be soldered , I've not done them before.
Thanks
