Sirion 4Trak- Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement.

Forum:

I am in the process of changing the rear wheel bearings on my wife's Sirion 4Trak. After much scouring of the internet, motor factors and Daihatsu Dealers for the correct bearings in stock, I managed to find them on Amazon.
According to 2 dealers there are none in the U.K. and most factors tell me they are the same as the 2WD Sirion. They are not. The 2wd ones are standard roller bearings you can buy from any bearing dealer and are fitted in the brake drum. The outer 4wd one is a unique bearing and is fitted into the axle housing with a separate seal fitted inboard of the bearing. The inner is fitted to the diff. assembly and is not replaced. The outer bearing is dimensionally a standard twin roller bearing but with a rubber seal on one side and a special steel shield on the other.
I have extracted both shafts. What I don't understand is why the bearings are fitted with the rubber seal facing inwards and the metal shield outwards where it is not well protected from water and muck.I suspect they have been replaced before Which way should the bearing be pressed onto the axle shaft?
