Sirion 2000 1.0 4x4, engine light and trouble starting + OBDs work on this model?

Forum:

Hi folks, Sirion owner from Norway here!

First I have to say that I am impressed with this litte car in winter conditions! I have driven it through ~1m of powdered snow without getting stuck, which is more then I can say for most other cars that have tried the same route in the winter. Sooo, about the troubles.

(1) The engine light started to lit up a few months ago, ocassionally at first, but after a while it became permanent. If the car is started and left ideling, it stays off, but as soon as I start driving, it lights up within a few seconds. I searched this forum for answers, and kinda came to the conclusion that it was a failing lambda-sensor, but without knowing for sure. I went to the local Daihatsu-dealer and asked how much a simple checkup would cost – £ 1200! Too much for my budget as of now!

So I have been driving it, ignoring the light (not good, I know!). I keep track of my fuel consumption on fuelly.com, and think it has been drinking a bit more than usuall. I'ts kind of hard to say for sure, due to variables like different drivers, different loads etc.

(2) Recently, the car has a new quirk. During ignition, everything acts normal – a slight boost in RPM before the motor falls back towoards idle around 1000 rpm, but instead of stabilizing there, it drops right down to 0 and dies! The car starts fine if I put my foot on the gaspedal during the ignition, to keep the RPM high for a few secounds. This happend rearly at first, but now it seems to become more common :/

(3) I was looking in to buying a OBD, but read somewhere that they only work on 2001-models and up, but can't find any reliable information on this. I have found a couple of promising OBD's that has bluetooth, with a nice price:

I'm driving to Holland in a few days, that's why the first link is to a dutch webshop – hopefully I can order it when I'm there Smile

Thoughts on any of my Sirion's troubles?

Have you an ODB-II connector?

Hi on the YRV and Sirion (2001 on) the ODB-II connector can be found under the steering wheel and to the left of the centre console. This is obviously for cars here in the UK and Japan, as we drive on the left and the drivers side is on the right. I would concentrate on looking here first before you decide to go out and spend money on a Code reader.
As for the symptoms this could be down to the O2/Lambda sensors failing. Note there could be 2 O2/lambda sensors on your car. They are normally located one in the engine bay and the other on the exhaust pipe. It wouldn't hurt buying replacements as it is known that on all models of Daihatsu these will fail. On my YRV turbo I replaced both because of this. The lambda sensors be bought cheaply enough when you buy from www.sparkplugs.co.uk. But you need to know for certain what the issues are, and therefore knowing you have an ODB-II connector is a must. I do recall reading that Japanese cars from 1998 onwards normally will have ODB-II ports. I am also guessing here your car being a 1 litre has the EJ-DE engine.

Thanks for you feedback! I have a hunch that the 2000-modell should work with regular OBD's on the market. As you mention, these small Japanese cars was probably a few years ahead when it comes to this things Smile

I think what I have under the steering wheel is a OBD-port, but I'm not 100% sure, so I have taken a picture of it, so more experienced people than me can take a look Smile

Yep looks like th OBD-II port to me.

Now to seek out a good OBD-II reader. can recommend a Scangauge-II As it has a built in fault reader for the ecu codes. Then you can use the gauges for things like water temperature, rpm, battery voltage etc.. So it's not going to waste. For further info go here: http://www.scangauge.com

You don't actually need an

You don't actually need an obd scanner though.

You can put a paperclip into the obd2 port, and join 2 of the middle two pins together.

Then the engine warning light will give you flash codes.

Its like this

But I think the pins are a little different from memory, I think the E pin is or T pin is one to the left.
