Ej-de engine tests

Forum:

Hi, I have just picked up a 98 non turbo 1.0 storia. It's a non runner, has silicon all over it and has obviously been given up on by at least one poorly skilled handy man. I want to get it running but the problems could be many.
So I need to start with the basics to plan my attack, hopefully not a new engine And every sensor it has!

Firstly can any one tell me acceptable compression readings, I have 175psi on cyl 2 and 195psi on cyl,s 1&3 with only slight improvement with a squirts of oil. Sounds like it should be enough to at least get it running????

A bit random, and showing my lack of knowledge on the daihatsu, I do not see any sign of a maf sensor. I am used to seeing these just after the air filter but this was all off the car. Where would this be mounted on this engine???
Any help is appreciated, this is going to be a challenge.
If all else fails I may have to buy a workshop manual Wink

Start with the basics:-

Do you have a spark on turnover?
If you put a screwdriver to an injector and put your ear on it can you hear it clicking on turnover?

If not, do you have 5 volts present at either the map sensor or the tps sensor?

Thanks for your feedback, I

Thanks for your feedback, I will check those if I can find them.
The reason I want to start with the compressions is that when I said the engine is covered in silicone, I mean.. Sump gasket, inlet manifold gasket, new head gasket, overfilled with oil by a mile(probably means the gas probe is buggered).
I really want to see if the engine or at least the bottom end, is sound before I start to spend money on it.
On another note, the air filter is missing so I am not sure if the mass air should be there, she's a real mess.

Yes has a spark :-). Cam sensor is glued on Sad
It's almost funny the more I describe her

I am pretty sure they do not

I am pretty sure they do not have a MAF sensor.

Well if you have a spark that is a very good sign!

That means the engine management system is working to some degree.

Next I would be temped to see if there is fuel pressure by parting a fuel hose somewhere under the bonnet.

A compression test would go along way as you say, but it only takes a couple of minutes to do.

The next step,any ideas?

Well just to follow up on this if only to help someone else in the future, it turned out the cam timing was out 1 tooth. Still no good. But I did manage to get her running by partially blocking the throttle body with my hand, once running was able to release slowly while upping the throttle to rev the engine, once warmed white smoke and the odd puff of blue. (Head, gasket or block). I should mention that the coolant and oil are mixing. Plus maybe a massive air leak which may even be the injector seals which look buggered.
I did a leakage test from 100psi which showed good on all cyls, somewhere around 20% which was hard to believe especially when I put an airline straight to the bore there was noticeable air from the breather??? Could be normal ??? There are signs of damage to cyl head from broken rings maybe but no obvious signs of cracks etc.
So I am left with head gasket either faulty or incorrectly fitted which seems unlikely as the head was tightly bolted, warped cracked head or a cracked block and possibly low compressions which I still have no data to compare with my readings from previous post.
There is an irregular line in one bore so a crack is possible there but too tricky to test.
So if you feel you can give me your opinions or advice, thanks.
And a question is, are the ej-de 1.0 long motors all the same, so maybe I could take the bare engine from a charade or the like and put all my manifolds etc on that????

White smoke could be just its

White smoke could be just its not been run for a long time so the silencer need drying out due to condensation.

Blue smoke could be oil from other peoples compression tests, and it not running correctly.

Get you timing light out and see if it is sparking at the correct time, you will have to put a jumper in the diagnostic connector to check the base timing against the mark.

After that watch the lambda sensor with a multimeter to see how its running, my guess would be very very rich at the moment for some reason.

To finish this story, the

To finish this story, the block was cracked so I fitted a complete motor. Jeeeeese these things are pretty fast Smile
