YRV 1.3 Turbo Automatic Service

Forum:

Hi, Recently brought a Daihatsu YRV, and love it, I would like to service it myself, what oil is best for the engine, and what is the gearbox oil used, and how do you refill the gearbox. I really need a service manual and owners manual, if anyone can help.
Thanks and Kind Regards.

Oil is horses for courses on these

Hi,

I currently have a YRV Turbo in yellow for the last 7 years. For Engine oil there are plenty to choose from, which can range from 0w-40 to 5W-40. I have used both 0W-40 and 5w-40 in my car without ill effect. 0w for winter and 5w for the summer. Don't forget the YRV turbo has a recommend service interval of every 6 months or sooner depending on your driving style and mileage. Usually get my oil from opieoils.co.uk

As for the Gearbox oil this should be done every 3 years including a Auto box filter change. This can be easy to do and the drain plug is located underneath the autobox, and you will find that the filter is located near to the subframe. To refill you will have to do this through the dipstick hole on the autobox (I take it you have seen this at the back of the engine bay?). Also it will take a couple of empties and refills to make sure you get the proper oil change on the autobox.

As for a service manual there is a standard YRV manual but this will not cover off the YRV Turbos K3-VET engine, as the standard YV came with either a 1 liter EJ-DE or 1.3 litre K3-VE engine. I do have a hardcopy of the actual manual for the YRV Turbo in a folder and not an electronic copy as the car was only sold in the UK in limited quantities for 2 years. I managed to buy a copy from a member on here by the name of DaihatsuDave.

Hope this helps?

Hi, Many thanks for the information, I really was hoping that there was another way to refill the auto box rather than the dipstick, that's gonna take awhile, I guess. Wow 6 month service intervals, that a lot of oil changes, oh well time to get dirty then.
Many thanks.

Doesnt take long ;)

Yeah just get a decent funnel. Luckily I know another member on here who basically gave me a hand with mine. An ingenious way is to stack 2 lots of funnels one on top of the other but may mean a 2 man job. You will only get roughly 2 litres of Autobox oil out at a time. It is also misleading checking the autobox dipstick to see cherry red, but the actual stuff coming out underneath is black Sad

This from DaihatsuDave's attempts which were similar results when we did mine;

Yeah as for the 6 months, this is down to the engine doing more work. The in between is really just a engine oil and filter change, just need to follow your service intervals found in your service schedule booklet (If you got one when you bought the car?). The auto box service is not mentioned unfortunately, we came across this in the users manual ner to the back where it mentions the autobox service interval. No Daihatsu service/dealerships know about this and one even told me it didn't need doing as the oil was for the life of the car Sad Oh and you can buy the Autobox filter from the dealerships at around £50 a pop.

ER, yeah, think that I will pay someone to do the gearbox fluid change, the engine, I should be able to do. No I haven't got any manuals or books for the car, not even an owners book. The car has done 80k miles, and the gearbox seems to be fine, all changes nice and smooth, so might just leave it alone for a while. Can the filter be cleaned, or just replaced?
Thanks for all your help so far.

Don't chance leaving the auto box service...

A few owners have reported issues with the autobox which is one of the Achilles heals of this car. Problems range from a flashing 'D' to the car not going into / skipping gears. We have this down to the gearbox servicing. If you think about it you wouldn't skip your engine oil changes would you? As for the auto box filter, no I'm afraid you will have no chance in cleaning it as it's a sponge fillament, and looking at the state of my original one it was not in the best state.
There are some things to look out for on this car, worth a search on here for them. They can range from water pump leaking to rear anti-roll bar brackets snapping (If the original items) I'm afraid. Not trying to put you off, but it's worth mentioning so you are not falling foul of gotchas.

Just to add there are a couple of YRV owners manuals for sale on eBay. If you need a proper service manual the. Worth contacting/Private messaging DaihatsuDave to see if you can buy a copy off him Wink

Oh, okay thanks for that, I will arrange to get the oil changed in the box, and a new filter. There is a Daihatsu dealer just down the road from me, so getting parts shouldn't be that much of a problem.
Many thanks
