Charade 2005 - Timing Belt

Forum:

Hi,

it's high time I replaced the timing belt. To those who've had one replaced, did you go for the kit or just the belt?

Did you let the garage source the parts. Was it easy for them to get?

Thanks,
Ed.

definitely go for the kit,

definitely go for the kit, which comprises of a belt and tensioner. the timing belt kits are very easy to source for you or a garage. i had mine done a few weeks ago. depending on where you source your parts, there's quite a difference in price!

Daihatsu genuine parts: Timing belt - 47.43; Tensioner - 72.27; Water pump - 128.40

Eurocarparts: SKF Timing belt and tensioner 47.94; Circoli Water pump 45.00

one other point - remember to change the drive belt (6 quid-ish at the moment from eurocarparts) whilst getting the timing belt done. i forgot to get it done at the same time as the timing belt so did it myself (and a buddy) a couple of weeks later - it is an easy job but requires two pairs of hands.

2006 1.0 Charade Timing Belt change

Wife's car with 27k miles on clock thought it was about time to change the belt given its age so got a belt kit from GSF for £50.20.
Started having a go at stripping it down to change it but space to do it was very limited which made the removal of the engine mount extremely difficult.
Had a look at removing the headlight to give more space but couldn't figure out how to remove it.
Sought out an independent who quoted £70 to change the belt using my parts. Went with that and job done and old parts retained for inspection.
Turns out the front bumper corner needs taking off to get at the lower headlight bolt in order to remove it to give sufficient room to strip the engine mounting and belt cover down to get at the belt.
Belt was getting a bit thin from the tensioner rolling on it over the years, belts teeth were still in good condition but looks like it was in need of the change before it snapped.
Well worth the £70 to get this job done by someone else.
