steerings gone soggy and pulls left with pulses can be felt thro column

Forum:

help - i just driven my `99 4trak 2000 miles to and from france towing a 1.6 ton caravan and really gave it some stick up hill and down vale. Just as i was thinking i`d got away with it i noticed this morning the steering`s gone soggy and pulls to the left - also i can feel pulses throught the steering wheel at low speed - any clues anyone? - thanx in anticipation

for info i kept speed between 60-65 mph and averaged around 20mpg towing - the beastie sometimes gives me 35 mpg solo though as long as i keep it below 65 mph (above that it drops dramatically to 27mpg at 75 mph!

Presumably you have checked the pump belt and fluid.

Strange to have knackered the power steering so soon. Normally these are very reliable. The tensioning bracket supporting the pump has been known to fracture sometimes though.

The juddering could be a slipping pump drive belt ..... had it myself when manoeuvreing at slow speed, but it's only a 10 minute job to tighten it up.
