Fourtrak 95' F78 Thermostat Gasket(s)

Forum:

Hi

Ok, another Daihatsu mystery. Does anyone know what the gasket set up is for the thermostat?

I looked at mine before I took it off and there did not appear to be one between upper and lower housing? I saw a YouTube vid that said make sure you fit a circular rubber gasket onto the thermostat itself…. Ok, so that's how it works!

I got a new thermostat but it did not have a gasket, circular or otherwise, with it. I queried with the the supplier and they said they never come with one. I look in the manual and it appears to have both a housing gasket and a circular gasket. The YouTube vid implied all that was needed was the circular one. I decide to ring around to find if there was also a housing gasket (instead of/ or as well as)… but no info forthcoming.

I took mine off thinking I'll use the old circular gasket but, of course, it had disintegrated. It appeared to be just a circular one not whole housing gasket… so I search for a new thermostat, find one with a gasket and order it.

I have just offered the new thermostat with its circular gasket up to the housing but the housing does not fit back on… there is a gap roughly equivalent to the thickness of the circular gasket!!…Well, there's a surprise! I could probably compress it down using the housing bolts but I just know where that's going… leaks or, worse, stripped bolts!

I'm hoping some kind soul out there has a 1995 F78 and knows, definitely, how the thermostat and housing are made leak proof?

Thanks

I think your reading to much

I think your reading to much into gaskets, as far as gaskets go these days, its easy to make your own with either a bit of gasket paper or most people prefer to just use rtv silicone, I use it on everything, gaskets dont exist basically, as for the round ring? its not in the workshop manual, only a normal gasket, can you take a photo? are you thinking of the water pump???

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Hi and thanks for the reply.

I have one of those copies of an old F70/75/77 workshop manual and it mentions checking the rubber grommet on the thermostat… page CO15 … On page CO16 It also mentions the housing gasket. I guess it's one of the things changed between models? Once i've figured out how to upload images I'll post the pages Smile

Oh yes, I remember all the fun making Ford Escort/Capri thermostat gaskets out of old bicycle inner tubes and gasket sealant… I guess I hoped those days were behind me! Smile

Ah… let's try this…

In last two photos, my old one is on left, new one without gasket in centre, new one with gasket on right Smile

Hi

OK, I decided to do this the old-fashioned way.

In case you're reading this and never done it before...

Grabbed some gasket paper and gasket sealant! Created gasket by tracing gasket paper on the top half of the housing with a ball peening hammer. Dropped thermostat into its recess in the bottom housing (minus its rubber circular gasket) … sliver of gasket sealant continuously around both halves of the housing….pop gasket on bottom housing…because the tracing was taken from the top half of the housing, the gasket should just cover the top edges of the thermostat (as it's in a recess in the bottom housing)... pop in bolts and finger tighten… leave for 5 mins then spanner tighten… not too much force!…. tidy up excess gasket sealant.

No leaks so far!
