2003 Sirion 1.3 ECU warning light

Forum:

Hello Peeps

Newbie here. Just bought a cracking little Sirion 1.3 2003 MY. Very happy overall with it although I bought it with a stated problem of the engine management/abs light being on permanently. Having checked out this site before buying it, it seems this may not be a major problem? this fault seems to manifest itself by 'kangerooing' in the lower gears, ie jerky throttle response - is this what happens? I took it along to my local Daihatsu dealer to get a full health check on it (£90 for an hours attention!) they found the 'upper oxygen sensor' needs replacing - is this the same as the lambda sensor? anyway they have quoted me £282 to supply and fit which seems quite steep to me. The receptionist ( a canny lady) looked me up and down and said 'it's unlikely a non-standard part will do the job, it really has to be a genuine part - I bet

Is she right though? can a pattern part solve the problem? also is it possible to just disconnect the battery for a while as I've seen suggested elsewhere on here?

any info gratefully received

Lambda, O2 - Tomato, Tomatoe....

Lambda and O2 are the same thing. Known issues on the Daihatsu range, and there are normally 2 of these. One before manifold (engine bay), one after located at the beginning of the exhaust pipe after the manifold.
Don't need original Denso and this one has been mentioned before about a blueprint part can be used. Battery off only resets the ECU, and if the lambda/O2 is a problem the light will come back on. Also worth checking Plugs and coil packs, as well as the coil pack distribution box which can also get corrosion inside I believe. Good Luck. BobF might be along to provide you with the parts for the lambdas which in all will cost less than what you were quoted.

lambda (thought this was a dance)

many thanks for your informative reply, I wasn't aware there were two of them. The Daihatsu garage said it was the upper O2 sensor so I would suppose that's the one you mentioned in the engine bay which hopefully should be easier to get to. I was passing a Halfords yesterday and enquired about the lambdas - they tried 15 different suppliers and none of them could find it ! so I'll drop BobF a line and ask.

me again

so....I fitted the new upper oxygen sensor the weekend. The light went out....for about 24 hours and now it's back on again. The drive is a bit better, a little less jerkiness, but still there. Correct me if I'm wrong but now it's a case of getting the engine code re-set? if so my brother in law is a mechanic and I'll ask him to re-set it for me

What's the ECU code this

What's the ECU code this time? Ideally you need a ODB-II code reader as Bob has said it could be the bottom O2/LAMBDA one that the ECU has found with now Sad
You have the correct top part number O2 sensor fitted? Someone on here bought the wrong type, I.e for a 1 litre EJ-VE and not a 1.3 K3-V2 as I believe the engine you have in your car. Post up the part number and hopefully Bob can confirm this for you Wink

update

brother in law came round and re-set the OBD. ECU light now off, but he said his OBD reader showed a fault as misfire 1,2,3 - he thought this might be the ignition coil pack, but said don't go buying one (yet) - see how it runs first. It's been better for sure, but the jerkiness is there still but much less so. So we'll see - anyone on here experienced problems with a coil pack though?

all info, as ever, gratefully received

Might not be the coil packs.

Might not be the coil packs. There is an ignite box where the coil packs are connected to. It has not been unknown for the connectors in this box to become corroded. Also another thing to look at is the MAP sensor. But there is always the case that the bottom Lambda sensor could be on its way out too. Oh well good luck!.

right...

thanks for that...will check it out - hopefully if it just needs a rub with an emery cloth or a spray with wd
