farty rugger/sportrack

Forum:

Greetings from NZ
I have a daihatsu rugger 2.8 turbo intercooled 4WD (1992, much like a sporttrack). The truck goes great on the whole and burns no oil between changes. However it had has problem when starting when cold. When I start the truck I let the glow light go out (about 2 seconds) and it starts on about the third turn of the key. The idle is a little rough at about 600 rpm (but not bad). However after sitting for a couple of minutes and then driving off the truck is a bit farty and stuttery and blows quite a bit of white smoke and feels very sluggish till I have covered a mile or so. The thermostat is fine and once the truck is warmed up it is sweet, I replaced the glow plugs with no improvement. Can anyone help?

Many Thanks

Lurch

White smoke...this suggests w

White smoke...this suggests water is getting in where it should'nt

Black smoke = unburnt fuel

Blue smoke = burning oil

You might have a blown head gasket. Are you loosing coolant Unknw

Nope, White smoke doesnt mean

Nope, White smoke doesnt mean water in a diesel. I take it your somewhere in the south of NZ Lurch. It gets damn cold there, and doesnt warm up too quick. Have a look at a truck when it first starts up on a cold morning. You will see plenty of very pale blue, almost white smoke. It will fairly quickly change to normal black smoke. I think you have more of a fuel supply problem. Probably an air lock between the fuel filter and the injectors. Start the vehicle and get it running. Now, undo the fuel line at number one injector about 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Fuel will leak out, and I can almost guarantee you will get air bubbles too. When the bubbles stop, tighten the fitting again. This should solve your problem.
