Belts on Sportrak engine

Forum:

Hi all,

Just been driving my sportrak (1.6 EFI, 1995) and what started a couple of days ago as a squeeking belt has snapped. At first i thought it was the fan belt, but i felt a vibration through the accelerator pedal after it snapped, which made me think timing belt.

The belt in question is one of the two visable when you open the bonnet. There is a large (wide) one, and behind it a smaller, skinnier one. It is the smaller/thinner one which as gone - but what is it?! And what sort of damage may it have done? Im guessing/ hoping its not the timing belt because that isnt visable.

All help greatfully received, as i cant find much in the manual!
Cheers,

That one is the fandrive and

That one is the fandrive and alternator belt. The other is the power steering pump belt.
The timing belt is a large one behind the plastic shroud at the front of the engine.

Cheers Dave,

Just had another look in day light and the alternator belt snapping has damaged and tried to force off the power steering one as well, so both need replacing.

Looks like a bit of a nightmare of a job tho, has anyone got any hints or tips about changing the belts?? How long should it take and what needs to be removed to do it?

Thanks in advance!
Nat

Belt change.

Both are very easy to re-new provided you have the correct size sockets and spanners.Should take about 15 minutes. All can be accessed from topside. But the belts from your local motorshop since each are freely available.

Belt change

Thanks for your comments, im going to give it a go tomorrow. I really dont want to take the radiator off, but i think the cover for the fan needs to come off cos there is next to no room in there.

If i cant do it it'll need to go into the garage!

Thanks,
Nat

Sporty belts

Who ever said Daihatsu's are easy to work on?!! Tried changing the belts last night after getting replacements from Halfords. Two of us were looking at it and i dont know if we both were missing the easy way or something but it looked impossible without removing the radiator!!

That stupid plastic fan protector wouldnt really move anywhere, but we managed to wrigle the first belt over the fan blades and into position, only to find it was the wrong size. But at least we know what to do now.

Just one question, how do you adjust the belts? I can see how the PAS belt adjusts, altho the bolts are all solid, but how do you adjust the alternator?? The manual doesnt say anything about it. Is it just the 2 mounting bolts, and if so how do you get to the bottom one???

I didnt imagine changing a fan belt could be so difficult! There must be an easier way!
Cheers.

I changed both ours when I fi

I changed both ours when I first bought it when I had the rad out for some reason - and although I'm sure it can and has been done, I would not attempt it with that still in place due to the risk of damage.

Otherwise it's pretty straightforward with no nasty surprises. Make sure you leave a slight amount of play. The PS belt is easily adjusted with everything in place, anyway.

Check tebsion after a week or so and adj. if necc.
