It wont start!!

Forum:

My fourtrack wont start, all the lights come on apart from the glow plugs, I have checked all the fuses and they are ok. Could it be jumpstarted or have I got to get it towed to garage? Any ideas will be much appreciated!!

start

Is it turning over and wont start or is it dead completely.

If its turning over and the glow plug lights not on, its probably the relay. If this is the case you can (with care) bypass the relay and using a length of wire (at least 35A rating) hold this on the + of the battery and connect it to the Glow plug bar. Hold thid for about 10 secs and then try and start.

Yes, it does turn over, excuse me being an airhead but what is 35A rating? and where do i get it?
Thanks very much for replying.

35 Amp rating means use fairl

35 Amp rating means use fairly thick wire.

For this operation, which is just to prove that the relay has gone, I'd simply use a jump lead.

USE a jump lead by all means but be carefull you dont short it out but touching it on the engine.

Try the wire, if it still dont start check the timing belt or chain, is it getting diesel? If its getting diesel and the timing is correct then it should start.

Had a set of glow plugs fail and no way would it start.

starting

Lack of glow plugs should not stop the engine from starting unless it is very very cold. It will be difficult to start and run like a bag of sh--. A worn engine with low compression will also be very hard to start. Bad fuel and a blocked filter will make starting impossible. Are you really sure it is the glow plugs?

Fourtrak Girl,
Even though you have checked all the fuses, replace the "engine" fuse with a new fuse. Sometimes they do die, but still look ok. Its a 10a fuse in the main fuse box. After replacement, leave the fuse box cover off, and watch that fuse as you try to start the car. Look for a small spark in the fuse, indication a possible short in the wiring. It will be easier to see in the dark.
Have you had any fuel filters changed recently? A service done? If so, its possible that you have an air lock in the fuel line. This can make for difficult starting and running.
Try a clutch start, get a tow, and try either 2nd or 3rd gear.
