Fourtrak 2.8D with a dodgy starter motor

Forum:

I'm having starting problems with my non turbo 2.8D Fourtrak, the solenoid just clicks (sometimes 20 times) before turning the starter, and sometimes it'll start first time. I've had a few suggestions made and it looks like I need to at least replace the brushes on the motor. Does anyone know of a service kit available or a good place to get the brushes? I'm based in the Midlands (UK). Cheers.

Hi Mike
Have you tried cleaning the cable connections to the starter and the earth cable to the engine as I had a similar problem and it was just a bad earth to the engine that caused mine not saying this is your problem but it is worth checking if not I do know of a guy who breaks fourtraks in the midlands and he may have a starter for you Paul M

I have been having the same problem. It first occurred when I bought the Rocky 20 years ago and has persisted ever since. I will fix it eventually.

One thing to check is that the 2 bolts holding the starter motor are tight. I lost one and broke the other a few months ago creating a problem. I ended up getting longer bolts and putting a lock nut over the protruding ends. Loose bolts give a lousy earth and can create the problem of the starter motor not working properly.
