i lost my 4x4 virginity and need some help

Forum:

hello and thank you for your help in advance.
i have just bought a k reg fourtrack 2.8dl.this is basically a commercial swb non turbo..to mot it i had to buy new leaf springs, this information was thanks to your good selves and milner off road do have a good service..

now my problem is so,,,,,,,,,,,
i have freewheeling hubs, and was told by the person i bought it off, that to lock the hubs i need to put the car in reverse,,roll back a couple of feet,,then engage 4 wheel drive and bobs your uncle..so armed with bottle bigger than my experience i headed off to the forestry.there i found a load of people trying to get up this track, which was very steep with large rocks and slippery mud...after some fiddling with the gear levers and rolling back and forth ,i tackled this track and flew up it with no problems at all (((except for some serious spinal vibrations)))..
not to mention i was on top of the world and a 4x4 king.
2 days later i got stuck in a field and noticed that only my rear wheels were driving..
so can you please tell me how do i engage 4 wheel drive and lock the auto hubs to avoid any further embarresment..
cheers
mike

freewheeling hubs

Not to sure about the auto ones but the information you was given for engaging them is actually to disengage with the driving in reverse I think around 10 meters is needed but as the automatic bit says they come on automatic when you select 4WD hope this helps Paul M

freewheeling hubs

10 meters in reverse?
If the freewheeling hubs are well serviced ie greased up then reversing 1mm will be enough

i am going to change the fron

i am going to change the front discs and pads this weekend so i presume i will have to strip these down during the process..

4trac

Right

First i presume you have an older 4 trac, with two gear levers, ist as per norm and the second a stubby one with 4hi, 4lo and 2hi.

If this is so then for four wheel drive stop the car, pull the lever into 4hi, or lo (i always use the clutch but you dont really need to) and then just drive off, the auto hubs will engage automatically. Then when you want 2wd, stop, put lever back to 2wd and REVERSE a couple of car lengths, they will then disenage.

If you have done the above and you are not getting power to the front wheels then with the vehicle stopped and in 4wd get undew and try to turn the front prop, if it wont turn then jack up the front wheels, both and try to turn them, as one turns so should the other.

Wher abouts in the country r u???
