Loss of power and engine management light on

Forum:

Help! - I have a 2000 Hi-jet which loses power on the motorway and the engine management light is sometimes on.

I am not sure if the two are related because the light has been coming on intermittently for over a year and every time we take the car to the garage or call out the AA they say the engine seems fine.

The main problem is the loss of power when driving at a constant speed on the motor way, which is starting to happen more frequently. Around town and on minor roads the van is absolutely fine. The engine stays running but we loose power in the accelerator, until we slow down, put it in second gear and it picks up again. It is making long journeys quite scary. We have taken it to numerous garages but no one can seem to find the problem. We have had the following checked/replaced:

Oil filler cap
Fuel filter
Air filter
EGR valve - apparently there isn't one on this model/year

Regarding the engine management light most garages can't plug the van in for one reason or another (light not one at the time, wrong plugs, weird model etc.) and the only one who I have found can want to charge £120 for the pleasure and it over 200 miles away! I am reluctant and wanted to see if anyone could offer any new ideas before I try drive all that way.

We have tried a couple of daihatsu dealerships, the AA and Kwik fits master Tech but to no avail so if anyone could has any better ideas/advice we'd be hugely grateful.

Cheers, Claire

From what you describe,

From what you describe, sounds just like you have a failing and weak fuel pump. It certainly sounds like a fuelling issue.

Why a garage full of supposedly competent mechanics/technicians can't work out the basics to investigate baffles me!

Motorway of course has far more engine load (strain) than normal driving to maintain a cruising speed, the extra wind drag is huge.

I have recently had a similar

I have recently had a similar issue with my MK3 Terios;
Only when doing a steady 65mph, sudden loss of power, to the poinbt where it is HAZRADS ON and move over quick!

This last for about a minute and only seems to cure itself once have come almost to a stop, then suddenly back to normal..........flippin weird.
