Sportrak - oil in the radiator!

Forum:

My sportrak (1991) just started overheating. Took it to a local garage and they tell me there is oil in the radiator. Suggested this could be a cracked head or leaking head gasket. Any ideas? Is it an expensive repair?

Yes, it's expensive.

Before you yank off the cylinder head, just check for water in the oil. If that's true, there is some leak between water and oil systems, so the head is the likely culprit.

The other thing to check for is exhaust fumes in the cooling system reservoir. If so, it's definitely a head problem.

If you are reasonably handy with spanners, and have some good tools, then doing the head yourself is not a killer. The major expense of the garage doing the job is the labour involved in dismantling and reassembly. If the head is cracked, you will need a new one, but that's going to cost big time, whether or not the garage stripped the vehicle down.

There is now steam out the exhaust and water in the oil so it is pretty terminal. Just part exchanged it so bye bye Sportrak.... I am very sorry to see it go as we have had it from new.

I have two new Dunlops so will post these for sale in the classifieds.
