Syncro

Forum:

Hi there.
I've been looking for a decent off-roader, and found an old Fourtrak (from the 80s - not sure when) 2-litre petrol. It looks like a good car, but I'm a bit worried that the syncro in 2nd doesn't work until it's warmed up. Can anyone tell me if this is a common problem, and if its a big problem? Any other "new buyer" tips also gratefully received!

Thanks, Al

re: synchro

Al,

This is very common. It is caused by the nut on the rear of the gearbox main shaft working loose and allowing the gears and synchro hubs to move on the shaft. This movement stops the synchro hub on second gear from doing its job and thereby causing second gear to crunch when engaged. There are many posts on this site and its predecessor from people who have lived with this problem for years without it getting worse or causing problems (me included !!)

Hope this helps - Al
