Swivel oil leak

Forum:

Jesus, now i have just noticed the swivel housing is leaking gunge everywhere.

Anyone know if these are easy to change.

Pete (wheres my credit card)

I have never done one myself

I have never done one myself but others have posted before about this one....on the back of the swivel housing there are two plates held on by quite a few bolts..these can be removed..behind the plates there is a felt and rubber seal...what you do is get a new rubber seal and make a neat diagonal cut so you can get it on...use some silicon to repair the cut..replace felt gasket and then plates..fill up swivel housing with new grease...

I had a leak too but fella at Millners told me that its very common and if leak was not too bad just to clean it off and check grease levels and diff oil levels regularly...heh it just past m.o.t. with me cleaning it up..so there ya go m8.

if you don't do it as above it means stripping down the complete steering knuckle..a good few hours work .

swivels seals

Just done all mine as and it was the half shaft ones that had gone few pence. Millners sells a polyurathane replacement outer seal and at the price they charge for it (£10.00+vat each) you will not want to cut it as it is supposed to last a life time, any play in the swivels may be taken up by removing shims top and bottom but if you need to replace the swivel bearings while in bits the one's millner's sells are to small someone on here told me it is the taper and you need to shim the base of the swivel pin or under the bearings, mine needed 1mm top and bottom,i thought it was worth doing but im hoping to keep mine for a good while and will be doing plenty of miles. hope this helps, also I drilled out the blank filling plug at the back and fitted grease nipples in this idea was pinched of bundyrumancoke but it does make all the difference for maintanance

thanks

Cheers guys, will have a good look at the weekend.

oil leak

Jack the car up and check for movement in the swivel bearings - they are top and bottom of the swivel and allow for steering. If they are loose and depending on the milage the vehicle has done then they will require replacing along with new seals.
