Sirion/Rally Lightened Flywheel

Forum:

Has anyone on here changed a clutch on their 1.3/ Rally?

Is so what's the flywheel like? I take it it will be conventional design and not a dual mass (mainly diesels anyway)

Lightening would be a decent and easy mod to do, Exspecially if needing to do a clutch change anyway. OEM flywheel are always a little overweight to make pulling away easier for the mass public.

Example on the GTti, The factory flywheel weighs 6.2KG, It is quite easy to get it down to 4kg without compromising strength, taking weight from the outer edge is more effective.

I have a chromoly flywheel from Japan which is now been taken to 3.2kg (was 3.8KG), never tried it yet, maybe a bit wild!

Anyway the benefits of a lighter flywheel are usually very noticable especially 4000+rpm.

Generally you cant lighten factory OEM flywheels far enough to make the car a pig to drive, 1.5-2kg is normally possible.

Engine smoothness is still very good, as long as the flywheel is properly re-balanced.

I have a very good engineer friend in italy who does exceptional work, he has doe a few flywheels (including re-balance).

If i can find a second hand Sirion 1.3/Rally flywheel i may get one done.

here's my chromoly flywheel made by JUN in Japan, on Paolo's balancer after some extra lightening:

and one of Paolos lightened factory flywheel, note the scallops cut around the edge to reduce weight on the outer diameter:
