How long should the glow plugs stay on for, mine stay on for no longer than about 5 seconds then loads of smoke when cold (ie first thing in a morning), sometimes need to try twice, I checked that current was going across them, all seemed OK.
Any ideas?

I'd say about 10, even 15 sec
I'd say about 10, even 15 seconds for a cold morning start. Not a problem though, just tern the ignition off and on again after the glows go out the first time. Also Daihatsu plugs (exept F50, where the glows are manualy opperated) click on and off several times after starting to help with cold starts. Is this prehaps not happening with your car? Get someone else to start her up, and listen just inside the engine bay on the right hand side. You should be able to hear the glow plug relay/solanoid clicking on and off.
