Fourtrak Independent Prop shaft

Forum:

Just discovered my 93 Independent is going to need a new prop shaft sometime in the near future as it has loads of movement in it and there is a big clonking when changing gear and drive is re engaged. Anyone know how much a new one is or a decent second hand one? My mechanic reckons its gonna be costly.

Many thanks

Are you sure it's going to need a new prop? It's usually just a new universal joint that's required. That'll cost you peanuts from any jap 4x4 outlet. Not even that much genuin I feel.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Prop Shaft

Had it up on a ramp this morning and the joint where the spline is has worn and its moving quite alot. what do you think?

Sounds unusual. Probably not

Sounds unusual. Probably not terminal though. Daihatsu's are overly engineared. If you can put up with the noise. It may cause damage to the gearbox eventually though, if your pulling away is on the hard side. Is it a long wheel base (F78)? couse I've got an F75 rear prop, which is I belive the same. You can have it for £20 + whatever it costs you to get it. I'm in Dover Kent. I'll send you my number on the sites mail system.

F78

It is an F78 mate, all i was told was there is a joint with a spline in and this has worn and now there is more play so when I re engage drive it is banging together. Was told I need a whole new prop shaft. Ill have a look myself and see if i can get a better description

play on prop

sounds like cup worn in uj 2 me m8. unless uj has damaged ends of prop then you shouldnt need a new prop, just a replacement uj.

prop

no what your talking about m8 the splined shaft hav you tryed to greese it to take up the play or it my be to far gone for that by now
try and speek to a local enginering firm thay may be able to fix it worth a try

Ah right I see what your sayi

Ah right I see what your saying now...no its not the UJ..the garage is sayin the actual spline is worn...never heard of that happening before..this is a first...hmmm an engineering shop may be able to sort it out for you...but a new prop is probably the solution...try breakers yards forst or phone Graham Dewhurst..contacy number under parts dealers at top of the page.

Prop

Yes I have tried greasing it up but still doing it, just had a look on Milner and its only £140 so im just gonna get a new one or a refurbished one I think.
Thanks all for your help

Just had a look

Just been under the truck and ill try and describe the problem best i can.
Prop runs from transfer box to diff at back, approximately 30cm from where it starts at the front is a joint with a grease point, here is the problem, there is a spline in here which is worn. and you can feel the play in it just by moving it with your hands.

When you say the 'joint' wher

When you say the 'joint' where the splines are ..what exactly do you mean m8.
There are two UJ'S..one at at each end of the prop (which after all is simply a cylinder that rotates ) is the movement at the UJ or are you saying there is damage to the actual prop itself Unknw
