Sportrak EL 1.6 1989

Forum:

I have a 1989 Sportrak el everytime I have drove it and parked up there is a strong smell of petrol from rear, I have had a look under the car and can't find any leaks any where, is this a common problem ?, can any one help please.

Petrol

1. Check the lines for a leak whilst engine is running.
2. Have you lost the petrol cap?
3. Corroded petrol tank. Smell will persist when parked and not used.

Petrol

Thank you for your reply, no i have not lost the petrol cap,I have had a look under the car and cannot see any leaks at all,the only thing I have not done is drop the tank.
It is very strange that I can get hold of a manual for the car, I am at a loss.

seal.

The petrol tank does hiss when removing the cap after a drive, ie removing the cap at a garage. Check if the filler cap seal has been damaged and fumes escaping.
I would not drop the tank just yet. Usually there is the trace of fuel if its leaking. Does it smell at full and empty?

Petrol smell

It only smells of petrol at the rear of the car and only when the tank is over 1/4 full. No there is no hiss when I take of the filler cap the cap seal is intacked, and no signs of a petrol leak anywhere.
It only smells of petrol when I have been out in it and parked up.

Drop tank and look.

Check the tank fuel connections [assume you have done this already] and if OK then its time to drop the tank. Keep fingers crossed that its leaking at the gauge seal and not holed.

Hissing caps and smells

Have a similar problem with mine in Australia. certain the tank is sound as rust is not really a problem. However the cap is old and hisses after parking up. Yours may not be sealing properly and you are getting tank vapours escaping. I also noticed we lost fuel on cornering if the cap was incorrectly fitted ( v easy to do )

Manual

I know what you mean when at a loss without the manual I was lucky enough to get hold of the manual on cd I think lurch on this site sells them check it out.But no way should you smell petrol at any time if you cant find it your self get it checked out by a expert it only needs a spark as petrol ignites on fumes and you are brown bread (dead).
For a few quid its not worth it.

petrol smell

Hi you should not smell any petrol at any time it might be the filler cap not locked inplace if not try laying cardboard on the floor when you park up it should stain it to give you a Idea where its coming from but if you cant find it get it checked out by a expert or your'll end up the other side of the globe.

Petrol smell

Hi John,
I have a 1990 Sporty with the same sort of problem.
I think the petrol smell is from the engine bay, but it can be noticable while driving.
I'm just waiting to erupt while on a motorway!
I've had 3 mechanics look at it so far with no luck - no obvious leaking hoses, etc.
A friend who is mechanically minded (I'm not) suggested it may be a worn needle valve (?) in the carb.
I'm taking it to another mechanic tomorrow with this suggestion.
I'll let you know how I get on.

petrol smell

well, i'm just a newbie to daihatsus but been driving for a good few years. anyway, the hiss from the filler cap, to me is a good thing. the tanks become pressurised (especially fuel injected vehicles). so this would then indicate that there is no leak, especially for air to get out. maybe, change the filler cap?? also, do you get any loss of fuel, try filling up the vehicle and leaving it for a few days, if you can. i reckon, if it's leaking and you check it after a long drive or the vehicle is warm, then you probably won't see much-evaporation. that's just from my experience with older cars. newbie.
