Power Steering

Forum:

Hi can anybody throw some light on a couple of problems first when I put my sporty on full lock the revs drops and engine cuts out this is on left and right lock it seems to me that the power steering is at fault and draws the power anybody had this problem can it be fixed or is it a new power unit which I'LL need a bank loan for.
the other is I brought some gear box oil additive but not sure about where top up plug is there are four plugs one at the bottom is obviosly a drain plug but which other is the top up one.

Alfie be very careful..dont undo the wrong nut cos it may be securing a selector fork in the gear box. I have a 4track so dont know about the sporty...a sporty owner should be able to tell you which is the correct filler nut...DONT undo any till you find out for sure.

Never heard of the power steering pump drawing power m8..on the 4track the pump is belt driven and would not draw power from the engine sufficient to make it stall..I dont think so anyway....thats a strange one !!

Power steering

Not sure of the ins and outs of power steering, but i know in most cars ive seen if you use tight lock (especially if turning the wheel fast) it can make the revs dip (a bit like using air con), and my sporty does it, but should be so much as to make it stall.

The filler plug is the hex head, identical to and directly above the drain plug.

As regards the steering, yes there will be a drop in revs as the pump pushes when the wheel is turned, but this in itself should not be enough to stall - I'd say it wants a good tune up for starters.
But have a look at the pump pulley to make sure it has not started to drag.

Two of the plugs are the drain and filler plugs for the gearbox the other two are for the selector forks for 5th and reverse so be careful !
