If its a garage job .... yes. White smoke is water vapour. Either from residue in exhaust or from the cylinders. If its the cylinders, the problem is either a blown head gasket or cracked/holed cylinder head. Check inside the radiator reservoir for air bubbles/oil whilst engine is hot and running.[not the hot radiator - removal of cap is dangerous] If the water is low then you are loosing coolant - suspect a blown cylinder head gasket or cylinder head cracked but coolant loss could be just a water hose leak... Any air bubbles/oil floating on the coolant then its the head gasket or cylinder head.
PS ..if its a head gasket then evenually it will cause a catastrophic failure and engine could boil/blow cylinder head hole etc. You could get the cylinders compression tested to sort if there is a leak.
when the fourtrak is started it smokes (white smoke)and stutters abit then stabilises and white smoke stops(all within 5-10 seconds). Does this give a better clue to the cause?
Diesels starting from very cold blow light blue smoke, almost white. It darkens as the engine warms up. First time I saw this was exhaust from a semi. I wondered what the heck was wrong with it, I was told it is normal in cold conditions.
