wheel nuts

Forum:

just got my L reg sportrak ELXi.The wife says its great except the wheels look a bit tatty. No problem love, I'll just whip off the wheels rub em down, a quick spray, good as new, easy !!!
If only. eventually sussed out that the funny little socket in the glove box fits the one funny shaped nut on each wheel.
my problem is some of the other nuts are rounded. took me 90 minutes with a hammer & chisel to get one off.

so
1. Is there an easier way?
2. Are they easy to replace (size ?)
3.Is the funny shaped nut to stop theft Unknw

wheel nuts

i've got the same elxi and same year and standard nuts(so has the car..)
i suspect the previous owner put these "anti theft"nuts on as
the socket in the glovebox was the adaptor and is supposed to key into
the nuts.
these things are always a swine as they round off given half a chance.if i where you i'd get 'em all off as trying to do it on
the side of the road or in the woods won't be nice.
try getting "plus gas"releasing spray into the thread, leaving
for 30 mins, then wiping off outside(so brace won't slip)as a last resort use a junior hacksaw to weaken the nut but be very carefull
of the bolt.when they are off put copper grease on the threads b4
putting on new nuts and you won't have the problem again.
i'd think long b4 putting locking or "anti theft"nuts on mine
as all kinds of crud can jam 'em and i'm always hearing stories
like yours.
let me know how it goes, the rev.

wheel nuts

Hi if anybody else has problems with rounded wheel nuts or missing a locking wheel nut key, try MAC TOOLS, they supply a special socket that fits over the old wheel nut and has a reverse spiral taper inside so the more you turn the socket to undo the nut the more it bites and holds on, i have used these in the past and they really do work. I think MAC Tools have a web site or ask the mechanics at a local garage as they have tool vans that supply the trade. Hope this helps in future. Brian.

wheel nuts

Managed to buy new nuts today, £1.50 each x 20 (good grief)
got home ready to spend the rest of the afternoon hammering and chiseling the rounded nuts off. ten minutes is all it took. Some days thing just go your way :):-)
