I'm new to this forum. Wondering if anyone can help me with my Sirion which has started to Pink as I accelerate from rest. It pinks in each gear until the revs increase. It does not do it when cold. I have recently replaced the air filter and spark plugs with no effect on the pinking.

Update
I have been trying to get a new belt locally at a reasonable price. The Continental Contitech catalog said it was a 4PK1708. When I went to fit it I found it was to long. Measured the old one at 1590mm. Continental Contitech don't seem to do one this length. Diahatsu dealer wants

was it moving in and out or is it lateral play?

The pulley sort of rocks from side to side, maybe about 0.5mm at the periphery, so I suppose it's lateral play. Unless the bearings were made with a little slack they are probably about to fail. Come to think of it maybe it's the pump that is causing the rattle.

When I got a new belt on the rattle seemed to get worse. When I finally got a new water pump the rattle stopped. The original pump only lasted 30k miles. I wonder if the way the belt goes on either side of the pulley and not around it as normal, could make the pulley more susceptible to vibration, and failure.

I think the pump was destined for a short life. Glad you got it sorted though. These belts are a pain, many on here had problems getting the correct ones. Will be making a note of where you bought your bits from - nice one.

How much did you pay for the water pump? Also what was the belt code, i assume you dont have A/C if the earlier pk1590 is correct.

I would be changing the belt, pump and the tensioner for good measure. This way there's a very good chance the noise will disappear.

The sepentine belt fix, was for a pinking/rattle noise that was normally when the engine was cold at 1800-2000rpm. It was a new belt that fixes this rather than tighening the old one. Only costs about a tenner so definately worth a try. The DVVT filter was perfectly clean on ours with 22K miles.
We have had this before on here!
And would you beleive it was not the engine pinking at all.
If you are very lucky - Adjust the surpentine belt and all will be well.
This went on for months and months on here.
Everyone adjusted or changed the belt and the "Pinking" dissapeared.

Don't like the new shape Sirion much.Sorry.

Thank for the reply. I tried adjusting the surpentine belt until I could just about move it 10mm on the botton run. The rattling is still the same. I have a feeling the belt may now be stretching as I have moved the alternator by about 3mm. Maybe I need to get a new belt.

Also possibly the DVVT as well.....
That what Bob has commented on
but also the DVVT filter was also a possible casue as well. Make sure you get the right Serpentine belt for your engine. Diagrams for these in the Images section under both 'Cars' and 'Technical'.

Thanks for your help Jon. My problem is I don't know where the DVVT filter is or what it filters. The car has only done 30,000 miles.

Ideally you need to get your hands on a Manual...
There maybe a technical diagram inder the Images section under 'Technical' that may show you where the DVVT filter is. Or by doing a search on the forums may help. Even with 30K on the clock the cars have known to make this noise. A few owners have changed the blets to a particular part number and this fixed the problem for them. Hopefully the people who have fixed this may come along and give their guidance.
