Starting Idiosyncracy

Forum:

My 1993 Feroza/Sporttrak has a perplexing idiosyncracy - it is difficult to start, but only during the initial attempt, hot or cold. I have replaced the plugs, leads, distributor cap and coil, checked ignition timing, valve timing, valve adjustment and compression (all perfect), removed, cleaned and had the fuel injectors professionally tested and replaced all vacuum hoses, air filter, fuel and fuel pump filter - all resulting in no change to the starting problem. The smallest attempt at initial cranking of the engine ALWAYS results in instant starts on the 2nd attempt. There are no error codes when I have checked the ECU service connector output amd the fuel injector relay functions as specified (i.e. fuel pump runs for 2 seconds at ignition on).
The car goes like a rocket and performs flawlessly in all other respects, returning an average of 9.8 - 10 litres per 100km (about 27 - 28mpg in the old money). In 30 years I have never experienced this problem in any other vehicle so I am absolutely stumped.
Any input or ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

If you mean the starter struggles first attemt then I had something like it cleaned all cable contacts and earths which I found had been shorting with grime and problem disapeared dont know if this helps you but thought I would let you know anyway

........or it could be the ig

........or it could be the ignition key barrel.....bad contacts!
Try spraying some WD40 into the barrel and wiggling the key around, it's worth a go.
