More traction for open diffs

Forum:

Ever noticed when bogged with open diffs ,the wheel that spins has all the drive and the wheel with all the traction has no drive

Well with a small mod you just might get your self out of that bog with out using the recovery gear .

So how is this done "easy" You need to make a seperate hand brake for the right and left rear wheel. When you loose traction the wheel that is spinning for eg. the left wheel you just apply the left hand brake.
This will give the wheel with all the traction the power
and away you go (well we hope so any way)
Give it a go

fidel brakes

so basicly waht you are saying is to set up a cheep fidel brake system to get you out of the deep stuff. do you no if it works?? if it does then can you tell me?? cos it seems like fun and i may try it.

Fiddle brakes

I have heard of this before, and apparently it does work, people use them for trials (also helps you turn tighter corners by braking the rear inside wheel to cause a 'skid-steer' effect). I dont think they are legal on road tho, unless they can be disabled or something.

They work basically like a manual version of traction control, i.e, brake the spinning wheel so those with traction get the power. I imagine they take a lot of skill to get used to tho.

No doubt someone on here knows more about it,

traction

they are used for hill climbing vehicles and dont know were but they can buy an hydrolic kit that works on 2 small levers near the handbrake so there is no chance of them locking on as with the handbrake method you would have to loose the rachet system

It works all right ,if you ha

It works all right ,if you have an open diff and 1 wheel is spinning if you can stop that wheel from spinning the other wheel will get the drive. You only apply the brake in short burts until the car is moving again.Just remember an open diff will only apply power to the wheel with the least amount of traction,if you can lock the spinning wheel the other must get the drive. This little mod will get you out of trouble more times than you might think.I hate using the recovery gear .

Short sharp (left foot) jabs

Short sharp (left foot) jabs on the standard foot break is quite often enugh to have the same effect. Of corse you need to be giving the throtal switch large amounts of large at the same time to prevent stalling. This workes by breaking all four wheels, so equeling out the amount of drive to all four wheels.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

You wont I believe equal out

You wont I believe equal out the amount of drive to 4 wheels ,with open diffs, drive will only go to the wheel with the least amount of traction. An open diff will only ever put drive to only 1 wheel at any one time

It does work. What esentuall

It does work. What esentually happens is that by breaking all four wheels, your forcing some of the drive that was spining the wheel in mid air to go to the grounded wheel. It's a fine balance between no effect and stalling. Fidile breakes will do the job much better as your only breaking the spinning wheel. However if your stuck and don't have them this trick could save you a long walk and the embarisment of being pulled out by a tractor, or (God forbid) a Landrover!
Try it yourself.

Does work

It does work, did it last winter with the ordinary hanbrake to get the back out of ice, unfortunately the handbrake can't take much use like that.
