clunk from underneath when engaging clutch and pulling away and also in various gears?

Forum:

hello can anyone help my fourtrack with 60k on clock has started making clunking noise when i engage clutch to pull away and does it in various gears i have been told possible loose prop with back diff and told not to worry does anyone know how to fix also been told they all do it is it true please help thank you

Clunk from under...

Sounds about right what you`ve been told, i`d also check all the mounting bolts, nuts etc around the axle (U-bolts and plates) as this could also cause the diff to clunk when the prop rotates. Not a difficult problem to cure at all, but whoever told you they all do it shouldn`t be asked to look at your truck!!!

clunk

so how would i fix new prop? thank you

Clunk from under...

Piece of cake!! The prop is nut and bolted to the diff with 4 x14mm bolts and spring washers, the other end is just slid into the cover matching up the splines, if you take the prop off make sure that it goes back in line correctly as this will cause you to wobble at speed. in other words the UJ`s should match each other at both ends, look along the length of the prop when its in the gearbox end and all you should see is one profile, ie one directly hidden behind the other one.
Hope this makes sense (!) It will all become clear when you`re on your back in the dirt with bashed knuckles!!

thank you what i meant was should i fit a new propshaft ,at 60k?is it expensive Unknw thank you

propshaft cost

think they`re around £135 from milner - see parts dealers - if it`s gone at 60k miles then it`s probably never been greased

I would not fit a new prop...

I would not fit a new prop...there is probably nothing wrong with the prop that you already have.

Check the UJ'S first..get under the vehicle and grab hold of the rear prop..yank it around in all directions..up,down,sideways..there should be no (or very little) movement of the prop..if there is a lot of movement suspect the UJ's..these are relatively cheap to fix..

The 'clunk' could also be caused by play/wear in the crown and pinion gears of the diff but at 60k I would very much doubt this.
There are spacers that can be fitted to take up play..if you suspect this post again and I will take you through what the manual says about fitting the spacers.

My old track 'clunks' a fair bit...but careful/habit forming use of the clutch compensates.

If you do have to remove the prop..make some mating marks(with tipex or the like) on the prop and diff flanges so you can refit the same as before removal.

thank you what spacers would i need and where would i get them just got new mot and my mate mechanic says ujs are fine help would be greatly appreciated thank you

Actually they are called shim

Actually they are called shims rather than spacers...silly me.
If you private message me with an email addy i could send you the relevant pages of the manual.
