It was my fault.......

Forum:

however I now need your advice. I stupidly ran out of diesel at the weekend in my new toy. F50 soft top - picture attached (I hope) ! Someone advises that I need to bleed the engine before I can start it, unlike a car were one simply puts in the juice and fire it up. Can you advise if this is correct and if so, how do I do it Unknw

Thank a million,

Graeme.

p.s Further to my previous post I deceided to buy the F50 which as promised is bloody fantastic.

I'm now trying to get 3rd party liability insurance for off road use only - any help with who to call would be appreciated.

I think that most modern diesel pumps are self-bleeding

My F73 has a self-bleeding injection pump. I ran it out once, put diesel in the tank and after some winding on the starter it came back to life OK.

If you want to be a little more gentle on the starter and battery, pump the priming pump on top of the fuel filter a few times until resistance is felt, before you try and restart.

No problem

Thanks for all your help. I gased her up, opened the hood, found a large white plastic priming knob, depressed it until hard (didn't bleed any pipes) and she started 1st time. Cheers.

Way Hey..

Not absolutely certain about

Not absolutely certain about the F50's, but the later F75's had a primer pump on the filter housing. You have to loosen the bleeder screw, and pump the pump till no more air comes out.

The primer for the F50 is a p

The primer for the F50 is a plastic tub type afair mounted on the side of the fuel pump away from the engine. It's in quite a tight space, and is originaly hiden under a flexibly plastic cover that resembles a larg bendy drinking straw. In normal use the primer is down. You need to un-screw the tube, untill it moves up & down. There is a blead screw to alow the air out on top of the pump, but to get better results crack of number one injector, and turn the engine until you get fuel/air out of it. Also parking the car slightly up hill will help (can't remember why now). Once you've bled out as much air as posible screw the primer handle back into place and tighten all blead screws/injector pipes etc, give the pre-heat a 20-30 sec burst to give the ignition as much help as possible then start the engine with half throtal. It'll be lumpy as hell to start with, just keep it at half throtal untill 30 sec. after she runs smooth. That should be it.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

uphill

Hi Nev
you park them slightly up hill as all cars feed from the back of the tank to reduce chances of running out of fuel uphill to run out downhill you can freewheel to a safer spot, so if you have run out of fuel you usually only put a can full in to get you to the garage and parking uphill would make sure it reaches the pick up pipe.

I know this is of not much use as I would not like to push my fourtrak to a hill just to bleed it lol.
