Spongy Brakes

Forum:

Hi,

I have a 1.6 sportrack, 1992.

The brakes have always been a little soft (have had the car for 4 mths) and never very impressive. The pedal feels very spongy and goes about half way down its travel before starting to bite, at which point it will go no further but braking is very soft.

Have checked for leaks and bled the system in the correct order and its no better. Think the master cylinder is ok because the pedal will not go to the floor, as I say it goes about half way but is very sloppy.

Can anyone offer any advice on this or are the sportrack brakes all like this...?

Cheers
Paul

spongie brakes

Hi Paul,
First of all if the brakes are not all what they seemed to be get the local garage to check out on rolling road for just a few quid its worth it remember lives are at stake including yours, but check all brake cylinders if theres any leakage thats where air will be coming in even if they look dry remove the dust caps and have a look. Replace with seals or unit, also remember that there drums on the back so they wont be a sharp as disk all round I notice this after changing from my old granada hope this helps a bit.

Alfie.
