Front axle

Forum:

Does anybody know if the bearings in front swivel/tractor joints are the same on all models or is there different sizes, I have replaced all mine from milners and they will not tighten up even with no shims in, I cannot find any wear on cups or swivels but when all put toghether there is masses of play on the joint, hope someone on here can enlighten me.

I had exactly the same problem with the bearings from Milners. It does seem that there are two types of bearing which do cross reference to each other by their part numbers. The ones Milner supply have quite a shallow taper compared to the original Koyo ones. There is quite alot of discussion on this subject on some of the American Toyota websites. Try this one for starters:

I got round it by fitting a 0.5mm shim washer under the bearings (top and bottom) where they knock into the swivel. I could then set up the pre-load using the shims which I took off at the start. I did look into buying Koyo Bearings (30303A) but they were pretty expensive.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that info and the other site read it with interest, this seems to be the problem, i have placed shims under the bearing race to compensate for the difference and loaded as stated hopefully now it will pass the MOT in the morning it has been a real pain in one way and another. next time I will try BSL as they match them exact in all dimensions, they helped me with the v seal for the power steering pump and only charged a £1,

thanks again
