Going Backwards or not as the case may be!

Forum:

Hi I'm having serious grief with my Daihatsu, for some reason it will not stay in reverse gear.... I did post before about accidentally taking the transfer box apart (don't ask, was stuck in 4wd) but I'm now thinking this is a totally seperate problem.... has anyone else had this problem - it's particularily apparent when reversing (or should I say trying to) up hill...????

Thanks again guys.

Dave

Hi Dave As you say reverse

Hi Dave

As you say reverse has nowt to do with reverse gear.
Therefore the problem lies with the gear box.

I take it you are aware of the 'main shaft nut' problem.
The nut on the end of the main shaft that runs thru gear box can and does work itself loose. First signs are diffuculty selecting reverse.
When you had the transfer box off would have been a perfect time to check condition/loosness of the NUT.
It could be this nut has workrd itself loose on your vehicle..then again ....
Its a well documented problem...could be a possibility m8.

Thanks

Cheers guys, I guess I'll take another trip under the vehicle and whip the transfer box off again.... I dont think it is just the sprin, ball not right because there seems to be quite a force when it jumps out (I've been trying to hold it in when stuck forward in a parking space LOL almost amusing) Cheers guys.... I'll let you know what I find....

reverse

Does it go into reverse easily then jump out or are you having difficulty getting reverse to engage?

If it jumps out of gear then there are selector rods under the gear box cover which are held in place with spring loaded ball bearings which locate in grooves in the rod. If the spring or ball is absent or broken then the rod will not stay put and it will jump out of gear. You can get to this easily with the 'box still in the car, just remove the gear lever then unbolt the cover. Be warned, the springs and balls can easily drop into the 'box. This happened to me once. You can get them out again with a magnet on a wire but it took ages and loads of swearing.

The main shaft nut problem usually affects second gear first due to the direction the force is applied by the lever so it doesn't sound like this to me.

The old main shaft nut thing

The old main shaft nut thing usually starts with 3rd gear followed by reverse. But not always. The 2nd gear thing is just Daihatsu's being Daihatsu's, and nothinh to worry about (usually).

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
