four wheel drive not engaging

Forum:

my 1992 fourtrack 2.8D will not go into 4wd drive, there`s a orange switch on the dash i think is the 4wd selecter,i`ve been under and have found 2 thin clear pipes, one from the top of the 4wd box that runs to the engine bay its not connected to anything and one from the side of the 4wd box which has been cut.where do these pipes connect, are they some sort of vacum pipes that work the 4wd any idea`s.:help:

The one from the top of the b

The one from the top of the box, if its connected through a T piece to the transfer case, as well as going to the engine bay, is probably the breather tube. It should end up in a upside down U shape against the firewall/bulkhead.
There were two types of transfer cases. Vacuum and lever activated. It sounds like, originally, your 4wd had a vacuum activated transfer case, due to the orange button on the dash. In this case, the transfer lever has only 3 positions, 2H-N-4L, selection being made by pulling the lever straight back and forward. Normal running 2H was lever forward/button out, to select 4H, you pushed the button in, to select 4L, you kept button in and pulled lever back. The earlier boxes were 2H (lever forward), 4H (lever pulled back) N (Lever pulled over to the right and then back a notch) 4L lever pulled further back.
I know that a lot of later Rockys/Fourtraks were retrofitted with the earlier transfer cases due to less problems with the selection process.
See if your transfer case lever will pull back, then to the right and back further. If this is the case, then this retrofitting has been done to your 4wd. If not, then others on the board will be able to set you straight on the mechanics of the vacuum solinoids and their tubing.
Remember, you also have to make sure the hubs are locked to have 4wd.

4wd not engaging

thanks for the help but i`ve had a good look and mine now and see that it should be 2H-4H-N-4L...but the gear box on it now is 2H-4L,looks like the gear box has been change to the power shift type at some point rather than keeping with the manual box now the 4WD wont engage due to not having a power shift switch.i`ll try wiring up the solnoids and see if i can`t get it to engage 4WD through a by pass switch i`ll make up.the orange switch has nothing to do with the 4WD but may come in handy...well wish me luck.
