I have an '07 Sirion 1.3 which is due for an oil change. As it is still within the warranty period I decided to use genuine Diahatsu parts and toddled along to the nearest dealer for a new filter. I was surprised to find it is not a spin-on type but a replacement paper element. The instructions on the box suggest a special tool is required to remove and replace the filter housing. Could anybody confirm whether I will be able to unscrew the filter housing with a normal removal tool, (I have the chain type)? I haven't been under the car yet, and would like to be properly prepared before I start. The last paper element type filter I had to deal with was on a Hillman Imp 35 years ago! Any advice will be gratefully received.
These dealers know how to charge, £10.58 for a paper element and two 'O' rings, and £1.09 for a sump plug washer. Phew!

Well, I have spent better Easter Mondays! I repeat an earlier remark, what a palaver. Who on earth at Daihatsu thought this was forward thinking? A simple job which used to take only 5 minutes, (including filling the new spin-on canister with oil), took me 50 minutes and made a big mess into the bargain. Unfortunately it also reinforced my opinion formed over 40 years of car ownership, that when you entrust your vehicle to the motor trade, you cannot trust them to do the job properly. If you want it done by the book, you have to do it yourself.
The car is just 2 years old and was serviced one year ago at a Daihatsu main dealership. What I found was, no washer on the sump plug when there should be a single use only soft metal washer as referred to in the vehicle's handbook, and the drainage plug in the filter housing which should be torqued to 10lbs/ft was so tight that it would not budge and unscrewed the filter housing which meant I could not drain the residual oil and it poured out around the sides of the filter housing. As BobF said "cover the floor".
After cleaning up the mess I tried to release the drain plug. It takes a 3/8 inch square key, (a socket extension will fit) but I struggled to hold the filter housing steady. My chain type filter removal tool, which is designed for use on soft bodied canisters, would not grip the hard alloy of the housing. In the end I dug out the water pump pliers from my plumbing toolbox and they did the job. I cleaned everything thoroughly, replaced the filter element and 'O' rings and reassembled with plenty of fresh oil on the rubber rings, and used the correct torque wrench settings. Hopefully the job will be easier next time.
I wonder if this type of filter is going to be common to all Daihatsus. Mine is the 1.3 but is it on the 1.0 or the 1.5?
In case anybody refers to this thread for guidance I would suggest the following:
Get an oil filter end cap wrench as referred to in this thread by YRV Tony. The main filter body has 14 flats around which measured a tight 64mm across. There is a 65/14 wrench available.
Always remove the drain plug first. If the filter housing moves, brace it until you can release the plug. There is a plastic nozzle included in the new filter kit which, when inserted opens a flap allowing residual oil to drain. A 1/2 inch tube or hose can be attached to the nozzle to allow drainage into a container. Should reduce the mess.
Use plenty of fresh oil around the new 'O' rings to aid reassembly, and only tighten to the specified torque. You do nobody any favours by overtightening.
The torque settings are 18 lbs/ft for the housing and 10 lbs/ft for the drain plug.
The filter element kit part number is: 01452-B1010.

Phew! This has taken me longer to type than it took me to do the job, but if it helps somebody else avoid the pitfalls it was worth it.

As far as I know the Sirion
As far as I know the Sirion 1.3 engine is pretty much the same as that of the YRV that I have.
On the YRV the filter is a spin-on type and is vertical, in a cramped position. It would be very difficult to remove with a chain wrench. I bought a special tool to get it off. This looks like a huge socket spanner.
If you look on eBay at item 220299622231 you will see a traditional spin-on filter and if you also look at item 400041735828 you will see the type of filter wrench that's easiest to use. They come in all sorts of sizes. You need to get the right oil filter and check its diameter and number of flats in order to define the right tool for your filter.

The 2007 onward Sirion
The 2007 onward Sirion has the 3SZVE 1.3 engine not the K3VE and does'nt have the conventional tin can filter. It has the messy to change paper element as Jorustle said.
You should be able to twist it off using your hands with either a rubber, rigger, garden or other work type glove will help.
The plug on the bottom of the canister i suppose is to allow oil drainage to lesser the mess.

I vaugely remember these things. What a bloody mess.
I did change one once - But I will be beggared if I can remember what it was on !!
The Nut in the middle at the end of tha canister is (I beleive) a long bolt !! It goes up the middle of the canister to fix the filter to the mounting. Undo the bolt and the whole thing just comes off.
Make sure you put the new stuff in - in the correct order.

New Sirion Oil Filter
Thanks for the prompt responses chaps. I can confirm it is definitely the 3KVE engine. It says so on the VIN plate. I think the 3SZVE engine is the 1.5 litre.
Dave, the photo you posted is spot-on. The part numbers are identical, I think this type of filter has been used since the new model launch in 2005. The bottom bolt, (it looks more like a plug than a bolt), is indeed for drainage. The new filter includes a disposable plastic nozzle, to be inserted 'with force' after removal of this bolt, to drain the filter body of oil. What a palaver!
I was hoping somebody may have done the job and could advise me of possible pitfalls but I guess I will have to find out for myself. I will update this post with my tales of woe afterwards.

Your right the 3SZVE is
Your right the 3SZVE is 1500cc, i got the info from the parts disc i used for the pic, yet another Daihatsu info error. Maybe it should have said 2SZVE?? The Toyota 2SZVE 1.3 is almost identical to the Daihatsu K3VE 1.3 and wonder if yours is a merge of the two or an revision to the the K3VE. The parts disc shows the K3VE having the common tin can type filter.
The bottom plug is described as such on the parts cd but was'nt 100% sure it was for drainage or just to hold something in.
A gadget i use for filter removal is called a "Boa" strap wrench, the rubber band gets a good grip, kind to all surfaces and fairly cheap to buy.

Footnote.
As a footnote, after some judicious research I can add that this type of filter is common to ALL 2005-on Sirions as well as the Materia and, oddly, the Toyota Yaris 1.8 VVTi.
Diahatsu say they have made this change to be 'environmentally friendly' and to avoid splashing oil on the hands when changing the filter. Good idea if it only worked in practice.
Paper oil filters
Paper filters are returning as a 'green' innovation.
My other car is a Smart Roadster Coupe, and they use paper filters as do the Smart ForTwos.
At least Daihatsu still give you a sump drain plug, in a Smart you have to use an oil extraction pump!
