Fourtrak slow to start?

Hi there, i have 1991 Fourtrak 1.8TD and it's very slow to start. I let the glow-light on the dash glow then go off and then start to turn it over. It turns over for a long while (no issues with turning over) but it doesn't fire up. It starts pumping smoke out of the exhaust and then finally comes to life in a cloud of black/brown smoke. Once started it runs like a dream and starting after that during that day if fine too! What could be the cause of this slow starting?? I know the black smoke is the extra diesel that isnt burnt that has carbonized but why so long to start??
ALL help appreciated!

Fourtak Slow To Start???

Would an battery that is too small be an issue?? The battey i have in it is much smaller than the holder in the actual car... Would a small battery cause it to take ages to start?? As i said before though this battery turns it over fine!!
ANY help would be great!
